I am making a small DIY FSBF and i talked to a guy that has used them and he said to be careful cuz the sand bed can alter PH of your tank.
Is this the case? If so will it be enogh to hurt anything?
It would all have to do with the media you use. If the sand were something like crushed coral, then yes it would change your PH, but if it's non-reactive sand (chemically inert) then it should leave your PH right where it is now.
Extra aeration is necessary as the bacteria consume it and produce co2 thus lowering and changing your ph.
Degasing units are often used after water has flown through the fluidised bed filter to oxygenate the water before it is returned to the tank.
If you read page 65 of the catalogue or 20 of the PDF you will learn a little about Fluidised bed filters and the their use with degassing units.

I have an account with them (Aquasonoc) and they know their stuff, especially when it comes to large scale aquaculture.
