fluidized sand filter

looking at building one of these.ive got a mag 5 to run this.do i use silica sand? how big diamiter and how long of a pipe do i use?im planning on using pvc.thinking a 1
'' inlet then using a piece to get it to 4" or larger pipe.how many pounds of sand can i use?thinking ill pump water out of my diy 44 gal garbage can filter then have it return to the tank.ive already got this rubberised horse hair fiber mat in the sump for the bb.thanks for the help

Sand choices are so many... just with w/e is cheap. Make sure its rinsed good before using it though.

1" to 4" is probably good.

No idea on how much sand... as thats gonna depend on your setup. But I think sand weight, dry, is about 5lbs/gal.
 
i picked up silica sand today.will have to get assembling to see if ive got all the fittings i need.(im sure i missed some.i always do)im gonna run 4"for the main part.and think im gonna try control the flow with how much sand i put in there.
