well i build a canopy for my 180 a while ago and i had some light problems

so i changed it up a little and i figured id share

i had it setup with basically the lights above the water with nothing to protect them besides the clear tubes that go over the bulbs

it looked like this

like i said there was some problems the light worked when it wanted to
must of rusted i wonder how that happened
heres a pix of the top(after i took it off)

so i went to lowes and bought this for 18 bucks

also i added some glass on the top of the tank to prevent splashes

and installed it looks like this

i used these lights

so i guess that should fix it

theres the glass above the water
the plastic cover on the light kit
and those plastic sleeves on the bulbs

all cell phone pix by the way

so what do you think

cool!

I can see why your old light rusted......lol

how many inches long is your new light fixture exactly? and how much did those bulbs cost ya?

gotta upgrade my lighting, it sucks!

Nice. Little bright, but nice.

the sand was mostly black before my fish rearranged it, once I add some more black sand it will look better

But it is bright it lights up my whole living room

lol I bet, I may just go for 2 32 watt bulbs.......

well there not working again despite the upgrade i think the humidity got to it,
so im heading over to lowes to get some new bulbs hopefully that will work.

anyone have any ideas to improve this situation?

i guess i could completely cover the top of the tank, but i rather not.

hang a piece of plexi-glass right under the light? drill a hole in each corner and put a little chain down to it......this may help

Also the fixture I bought says 'suitable for dry or damp locations'

i had the same problem with the lights
so i went to lowes and i bought a completely seald light
it has a cover with clips and a rubber seal around the cover
