Just need some basic help guys... I dont do fish alot. Heck I think keeping guppies, local fish, and a few goldfish wouldnt even consider me a fish hobbyist.

Well I'm setting up a 29g tank this week. I'm looking at setting up a all natural planet tank with fish and plants.

Will the Fluval 204 be overkill? Also what kinda of filteration media should I use. I'm pretty much stocking it with sand (substrate), driftwood, java fern, and rainbow fish. Lighting will be a coralife 10k and 6700k bulbs.

Is there anything recommend or I should look into?
I was considering getting a AquaClear 110 PowerFilter...

Ideas? , opinions, tell me what you think.

Sidenote! what tank size would best suit my other Fluval 304?

sand isnt a good idea for a canister filter as it would suck up the sand, unless u cut the pipe and make it smaller because it will go to the bottom of your tank, well the stronger you get the more water flow is going to come out, it will prolly blow your sand around.

I personally do not like the Fluval's if it has the coiled ridged tubings as crud invariably will get stuck in both the intake & rtn tubes. + I didn't care for the "ease" of maintenance. I had the 204 as a 2nd filter in my 72gal BF with AC110 as main filter.

I also had AC110 on my 20gal - way too strong but did it keep the tank clean! great suction power!

But since I got disgusted with the 204 backwashing a ton of crud into my 72gal when I cleaned out the canister (I wasn't aware that I needed to clean/blow out the tubes itself also) I decided on retiring it & buying another AC unit the AC70.

So I switched the AC110 from my 20gal to my 72gal & the new AC70 into my 20gal. I now have double AC110's on the 72gal & the AC70 it is still powerful for the 20gal.

Now I am a happy camper + I don't mind the ease of maintenance for the AC's.

I would strongly suggest, if you are not set on canisters, then go HOB & go AC's.

www.kensfish.com & www.bigalsonline.com I found had the best prices with very decent shipping costs that don't kill you (like Dr.F's).

++++++ u'll save a bit of $$ !!

It would not be overkill, I have hardly ever seen and overkill, remember manufacturers way overate their filters when it comes to what size tank you should match with.

If you already have the 304, use it on the 29G, it should do a great job.

Do be careful with the intake being to close to the sand.

In mine I use about 80% bio media(your choice) I use the Fluval rings plus some other rings I had. And in the very top basket I use Seachem Purigen.

I've had a 404 on a twenty gallon tall for years. It has a silica sand bottom and I don't use the intake tube. Connected the strainer directly to the hose without trouble.
