Well, I was running a fluval 204 on my 29 gallon tank and did a good rinse of the sponges and media last Friday. I have noticed for a few months that the filter would leak a little bit whenever it was shut off. Then, when I would turn it back on it would stop leaking completely after a few minutes and run dry until I turned it off again. Well, when I got home tonight I checked my tanks and found a puddle extending from that one (luckily it was on old tile floor). I went through the effort of disassembling the entire filter, cleaning all the sealing surfaces and orings, lubing everything up with a little pure vasoline (it's all I had), and reassembling it all. No luck! I started to have my suspicions at this point and took a flashlight around the edge of the can and I saw a very thin line. I put a little pressure and sure enough, the line was a crack. What a bummer.
Fortunately, I was running two filters on the tank, this one (180gph) and a Top Fin internal (180gph), which are both capable of running the tank on their own. My canister media was my long time cycled media, I just added the Top Fin a few months ago, just in case something like this happened. Because of this, I switched my canister media into the Top Fin and put my Top Fin media into a basket and put that in the aquarium in the flow from the internal filter.
So, now I am just debating on if I should try to replace the canister filter and, if so, what should I replace it with. Any thoughts?
Well, if you made it this far, thanks for reading and listening to my unfortunate event.
