Hello, I am new here. I have a question and would love any and all help you guys can give! I have a fluval 305 on a 46 gallon freshwater tank. Do I need more aeration than what this filter produces? Should I add an airstone? I was told before that airstones do very little to add oxygen to the water. Is this true? I have a few tetra's and one blue ram for right now.

with what livestock you have, the 305 should be enough aeration. if you plan on expanding and will not be planting, i'd add more aeration or make sure your filter outlet is breaking water surface or at least exiting near the top of the waterline.

welcome!

The Fulval itself should provide enough circulation to aerate the tank, especially with the stock of fish you have.

You're doing fine with what you have and you are correct. An airstone is more for looks than anything.

Airstones aerate by agitating the water. The upwelling of bubbles moves water up to the surface and increase the surface area that the oxygen transfer takes place across. Plus, airstones look cool. They are, however, entirely unnecessary. If the fish hang out at the surface and are gasping, you may need more aeration. Otherwise, you are fine.

i would put a air stone in. flexible ones are good but float. my brother has a 6ft air stone lol
