When you say canister alone do you mean the canister, just the filter case or eveything except the media baskets inside or, like are you missing hoses, the o-ring, impeler ect.? Maybe you could describe a bit more what you mean w/ this http://www.marineandreef.com/shoppro/fluval_404parts.html, no it's not the 403, but you'll be able to describe most of what it comes w/ or not using the parts list. :) :) :)

it might be just the canister itself like the one I had for sale nothing else you need a spray bar, hose, intake tube and strainer and to make cleaning easy a quick disconnect valve.

Personally I'd stay away from the 03 series and keep looking.

We just picked up a 404 with everything...plus some replacement parts....(impeller...impeller cover...main O-ring) for $35.00. All it needed was some sand cleaned out of the motor and it's working perfectly.

If this is the 1 your looking at http://cgi.ebay.com/Aquarium-Canist...ryZ46310QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem , then thats $40 shipped, min. since the bidding is still on, obviously it could be even more in the end. It loks like you'll need new flex hose 1/2" id I think (buy that at any hrdware store), then you'll need the intake & outflow pcs. which can still be bought today Consider looking at http://cgi.ebay.com/FLUVAL-405-AQUA...hZ013QQcategoryZ46310QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem if you could afford to wait or could buy it now you'll be much happier w/ it. Not that there's anything wrong w/ the 403 model's, but a lot has changed, much easier filter to wrk w/ much easier :) & you would get a lot more life out of a new 405 & enjoy having it for many, many yr.'s to come. As wolf said you'd be best to keep looking though. :):):)

thank you so much big, and thats everything i need? thats looks like even a pretty good deal compared to prices ive seen i might have to just pick that up.

and wolf, where did you find such a good deal?

ps if i buy it ill be asking you guys for info on putting it all together the second i get it. i just recently got my 55 and i have a top fin 60 on it and obviously, that just isnt cutting it. but ive always stuck with that kind of filter and im begginning to realize i need something more.

That was a canister I picked up off of Ebay about a week ago. it was shipped the next day and arrived the day after that. You can buy a New (unused) 404 for 96.00 with free shipping.

The differance between a 404 and a 405 is slight. Better design for the hose holding brackets on the 405 and a differant color...the rest is basicly the same. Between the 04/05 and the 403 theres a LOT more. no priming pump on the 403 and the internal arangement of the media is differant. The 04/05 series have a much greater mechanical capacity and a longer internal flow path. They also have the one piece flow stop valve assembly and that makes a WORLD of differance at servace time.
