Fluval 404 cannister vs Rena XP3 cannister

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am planning to buy a Fluval 404 for $60 and it comes with a plexi 55 gallon tank with light. Do you think it is worth it to buy it at that price? I need a filter and the plexi tank with light are extras.

I have a xp3 and 2 xp4s they work great. I have an Fluval 403 that I gave to a friend... he gave it back.

I have had my 404 with no issues for over 10 years now and still running.Priming is a pain in the arse but ya gotta just learn the tricks.

I got a fluval 405 and (knock on wood) No priming or leaking issues... Great flow , great media capacity. No issues except I broke a cheap impellar well cover. Ive had these filters run 5+ years without issue I love them.

I still have to give the nod to the Rena I only own one but it is a very cool machine. Built solid easy to maintain etc etc all around a great filter.

I've had both, prefer the sponge prefilter in the 404.. In all the years I've only had one not seal well. However vasoline seals it fine.. Note there are several manf varations of the 404 on the market. Google the 404 for a user manuall to determine approx age of filter fror sale if buying used.

inital priming is so so better than some classic eheims. but with the new shut off valves it's a no brainer to maintain and clean

XP3

Easier to maintain
more options for media (no silly wasting of space with the sponge on the side)
Easier to prime
Better hose to start with(if someone changed the Fluval hoses you are a head)
Better flow with media
Spray bar
etc....

I have been brutal to a couple of my XP3s and they still are kicking like champs. There is a reason Fluval parts are VERY easy to find. You will need them.

XP3 all day.
