I'm buying a used 75 gallon setup tomorrow ($200 bucks, from craigslist :)) and it comes with a wet/dry sump, but no other filter. I want to get another filter for mechanical filtration. I can get a fluval 404 for $87, or 2 emperor 400s for about that price. Which would be better? I think I will probably get the 404, since it is such a good deal, but I figured I should get some more opinons.

404 all the way! cansiters over HOB's every time.....More media sq footage for mech filteration........

K I think I'll order it now then. Just a heads up, they are only $87 on ebay with free shipping.

404 is the older model, new fluval is 405 ----one of our MFK vendors has a pretty good deal on new units

Theres not many differences between them. according to the website:

Fluval 04 VS 05 Series

Question What is the difference between the 404 and the 405?

Answer There have been so many design changes to the 404 while it was on the market that it is difficult to compare the various models with the 05 series. For this reason, the differences mentioned are from the latest 04 series versus the new 05 models.

When comparing the 405 to the latest version of the 404, they are very similar.

Aquarium capacity, flow rate and filtration volume are all the same.

The 404 is gray and blue while the 405 is black and silver.

The brackets that are used to hold the hoses over the rim of the aquarium on the 405 are more user friendly. They do not have the rubber bands like on the 404.

The 405 also has a larger, clog-free intake strainer.

not worth the extra money, I think.

I bought one of those 404's from ebay. Good deal but it is a b---- to get started. I must have pumped/primed that thing 1000 times.
