so cal
is a fluval 404 too much for a 55 hex with about 6 datnoids and few plecos and a couple of small cats. tank is a grow out tank. should i also keep the the undergravel filter with a 802 on it? should i reverse the powerhead? should i turn down the fluval? is it better to run more bio media than carbon i have two trays full of bio media and two trays full of carbon? thanks

A lot of guys will tell you that you don't need carbon at all. With good biofiltration, carefull water management, and avoidance of any contaminating chemicals, this may be true. However, I prefer to keep a little carbon in my filters anyway because it is excellant at removing unwanted chemicals from your water (nitrate/nitrite/amonia/amonium excluded)

If you use it, it's better to use small amounts and change it more frequently rather than a large amount changed infrequenly. I would recommend only 1 tray of carbon and that the rest of your filter be dedicated to coarse, porous biomedia.

thanks what about the powerhead do you think it would be better to reverse it?
If it's been running awhile, and you want to keep it, I'd leave it alone.
Reversing it without a major cleaning could be a disaster.
