Hey I just bought a canister filter for the first time. It says that when getting it going the first time that the output hose should be higher than the water level. My question is, once the filter is going on its own can I raise the water level above the output hose? It may be a stupid question but I am new to canister filters.

Yes. I once had a 404 and I would get it going first(flow is very weak at first), and then lift the output out of the water, then put the output back in the water. Lifting the output out of the water makes the flow increase to its normal level.
