I recently purchased a used Fluval 404.
I thought it was a good deal considering the price of a new one when they first came out.

The thing ran for two days, quit, leaked and soaked my carpet and stand.

I sent it back and got a full refund, except for what I spent for new filter media and the time and effort of fooling with it and cleaning up the mess.

I even put silicone around the rubber O ring, because I had read about the problem with leaks prior to purchasing.

Just thought I would pass this along.

I absolutely loved the ease of use on my 304.
Then I bought an XP3.
I don't really care for the maintenance required on my 304.

I have two 404's and I got them used. Never leaked a drop. Of course there's a chance yours is just a lemon but there are a few things I would have checked before sending it back: Is the O-ring clean, properly greased and seated? Is there anything blocking the top from completely sealing with the canister body? Are the clips that hold down the lid applying enough pressure to seal the canister tightly?
Putting silicone on the O-ring is not a good idea, that may be the reason the lid did not create a tight seal with the canister.
