Right now I have a Fluval 405 and 2 Emperor 400's runing on a 90 gal. In the tank I have a 8" Florida Gar, 6"Tropical, 10" Duck Knife, 7" Syno. Cat, and will be putting a 10 " Silver Aro this week. This is a TEMPORARY tank and all will go into a 180 or 240 Later this year. My question is is this overkill on filtration and would one 400 and the 405 be ok? SOme of the fish act as is the current is to much and do not come out and swim as they did before I put the 2 400's on. Thanks in advance.

1 405 is enough to power the tank, however with agressive fish the more filtration the better because they can be messy. Leave two on it will save you work.

There are far more important reasons to have multiple filters on a tank, rather than the reasons you gave. It is more important to have backup filters in case something happens to one of your filters. If you only have one, then if something goes wrong, and you don't catch it, good bye fish.

I'd leave them all up and running. For the 405, what medias are you using? I'd recommend adding some foam in place of 2 trays so that you can boost your mech filtration.

I took one of the Emp. 400 off and the gar came alive and started hanging around the top and feeding very easily which they were not doing. I believe the current was bothering them. In the 405 I use the foam block with pretty much nothing but Ehfisubstrate or Bioglass rings for benefitial bacteria. I do the same with the 400 mechanical and Bio filtering. I use Ehfisubstrate in the 400.
