I recently purchased two Fluval 405's off of Ebay. I paid $240 all together for the both of them. They come with 4 baskets, but two of the contain carbon? I feel that filling both of the baskets with carbon would be a waste. So I'd like to fill one up with bioballs. How does this sound? would it mess up the flow? any opinions?

IMO carbon is not necessary in the tank at all. I feel it is a waste of money. I stopped using carbon years ago. I was told that some of the benefits to using carbon were clear water and no smell. If the conditions in the tank are correct it should be clear and if i can actually smell my tank then i know i have a problem somewhere.

Direct answer to your question: No it shouldnt be a problem using more bio less carbon it is actually a good thing. My suggestion fill both with bio and stay on top of your maintainence.

I put biomax in 3 of the baskets and floss in the other because I found some stuff would get through the big pads and my tank wasn't quite as clear as I'd like. Mine is the 404 but they're basically the same filter. I have the floss basket on the bottom and the 3 with biomax above it.

I have Ammonia Chips and Carbon, Ceramic Rings, and Peat in my baskets.

you can also purchase pot scrubbies and save alittle for good bio filtration.....I never have but alot of members swear by them.

I think Ill fill one with scrubbies and the other with bio balls.
