Fluval 406 noise problem

Basically I have a really loud noise coming from the filter and I have no clue what to do as I have no experience with fishtanks or filter as this tank belongs to my boufriend who is traveling atm. I have search and read online that I could be air coming through.(and there is no water flow either)
Can you pleaseee help as you can hear the noise throughout the house, but you will need to explain what I would need to do in a lot of detail.

first unplug it, sounds to be running dry, this is not good.

it should have a primer pump ontop, making sure intake is submerged, keep pumping this untill no more air bubbles come out the spray bar, hopefully the primer pump is working, once this is done plug it back in. if this fails will have to go a dif rout,
