I am planning on getting a 180 gallon set up and I am not sure whether to get a Fluval FX5 or Eheim 2180 cannister filter.

I would like to get opinions on which is better and has less problems.

Opinions about the Fluval G6 would be helpful as well. I am considering that one as well.

Thanks

llots of threads on here about that ...but I dont usually think canister ...when it comes to filters I GO FOR SPONGE-HOB COMBOS

Fx5 is good. That is what I have used. Never used the other. I have 2 fx5 and they are nice.

i think the majority of people here will say fx5. i own neither of these though...1x xp3 and 5x eheim classic 221x's and sponge's for me.

Love my 2180 and the integrated heater. I also feel as though Eheim filters are second to none when it comes to craftsmanship. The attention to detail is noticeable & appreciated. I've had Fluval and while they're good... there just not as good. My vote would be the Eheim.

Pretty sure there's a massive multi-year argument....err...thread on this exact topic. Personally, I've had both brands and not had problems with either.

I'll agree with Jer though and give the edge to the Eheim. I've got two 2080s and absolutely love them.

I have been using Fx-5's for many, many years and love them. Very little maintanence and the power of the fx-5 is awesome.
I am up to 13 of them now, and wouldn't choose anything else.
I've had eheim before and thought it was great till I got my first Fx-5!!!

I don't have either filter (though the FX5 was on my short list for my 155), but I'm sure if you looked hard enough and your timing was right, you might find you could get two FX5's for the price of one 2080! And wouldn't you really want two canisters on that 180 anyways

The same can also be said for your timing being right and getting an Eheim for half the price of a FX5... I know I did. Either way, this really isn't the question being asked. The question & topic is which one is better.

Casting my vote for the FX5. I have 2 on my 180 gallon and I am very pleased. Very solid construction as well. I don't really worry about it leaking (at least not nearly as much as I worry about my 2 Aquatops leaking).

In regards to the G6, it is really over-priced for what it does. Now I will admit, I really want one, but I don't need it. If I find a deal on a used one, I'd love to try it, but it doesn't move enough GPH to handle a 180 by itself. Very slick-looking piece of technology though.
