I just got my 75 gallon tank with a Fluval FX5 with 6 red's ( they will be moved or sold when they reach 6 inches) but i was wondering how many water changes a month would i have to do since i have the fluval FX5?

nice filter, how much did you pay? even though you have an fx5 doesnt mean you can take longer breaks on water changes. the more frequent the better so like 30% 3 times each week, and make sure to dose your de chlorinator. and make sure to gravel vac with each water change keep your temp at like 80 if you can, dont leave uneaten food in the tank and make sure to maintain your filter media correctly. get a water testing kit and check whenever like every week and a half. good luck enjoy

I guess it depends. 30% three times a week seems a little extreme tho'. I use an fx5 on my 180 with a group of 8" pbass. Full of biomedia. Heavily planted tank as well so lots of nutrients get sucked up by the plants. 20-30% wc once a week and no gravel vacs cos of the plants. Uneaten food gets removed after 1/2 hr or so. Like I said, depends on how you've got the tank set up.

20% 3 times a week with one gravel vac is extreme its extremely healthy. the more frequent water changes the better its not the volume of water its how frequently your doing it a 50% change 3 times a week may be a little much but if you dont keep live plants in your tank and would like to focus on only the fish, like me, then youll definetley want to stick with my routine, umm i dont recall losing a fish.

i dont have as much filtration as a fx5,but i still change water only every other week.
ammonia still 0.0
nitrites 0.0

i would change my water 25% each week

dammm...20%-30% water changes 3x a week that is a bit extreme...your almost like a human filter j/k. But hey...if it works 4 you than just do it. I agree with ya tho...more healthier your water is....the happier your fish are....the faster they'll grow. I'll just say 2 hernane002...even with an fx5 or any filter you have in your tank (unless your running a drip system)....you still have 2 do water changes if ya wanna have good water params. IMO...A 30% water change with a gravel vac weekly should be good enough.

Doing 3x30% a week wont hurt, however its not nessisary since your just wasting water. If your changing 100% of the water per week you will be removing barly any toxins. If you do 30% per week it would be fine and it would still keep no3 in check. Like said it wont hurt but changing 100% per week on a large tank isnt practicle since its basicly replacing clean water.

did you get an fx5 or xp3? you posted over on p-fury that you had gotten a 75 gallon and the xp3

With 30% water change 3 times a week you dont need a filter :P

To keep the system working good, just add fast growing plants and change 10% of the water every week and do a gravel cleaning also.
Don´t forget to clean the filter every month and youll be ok. Just dont over feed them...
