I got a bunch of fluval pre filter media with the fx5’s and 404 I got used is it any good as a bio media? Should I use it or throw it away? Not sure what to do was going to run all trays full of bio if this will work as some kind of bio media I would use it, was thinking about a pre filter on top with this in first trays then bio max or bio fx is the others? Don’t want to waste it if it could be used and beneficial for my cycle any thoughts? Both the fx5’s and the 404 were purchased used and came with the media pictured.

Just for precaution unless you know the filters used in the previous owners aquariums had healthy fish.

I personally would soak the biomedia in a bucket with 1part bleach 5 part water. Rinse well after soaking let dry completely and use.

It’s been out for months to years, when I pulled it out of the filters it was bone dry, definitely won’t help seed my tank cycle but will it hold much BB once my cycle starts? Great thank you I was thinking about using bleach to clean them, I rinsed them in the sink with a bunch of hot water to get some of the crud off of them.

K Kloopsfish87 , what you have is the Fluval Pre-Filter Media as noted in your original post and it is used mainly as mechanical filtration so would be best placed before other filter media to catch coarse particles.

Having said that, I agree with tlindsey tlindsey suggestion to treat with bleach/water mixture but be sure to only use plain regular bleach and not the newfangled splashless versions that contains other ingredients.
