ok im getting this fluval canister filter off my cousin, i believe its the 305.
anyways it has 2 broken latches. im guessing it wont work the same without a full seal. is there any kinda hood sh*t i can do too make it work. im sure there is a way to ghetto rig it to get a full seal! i need opinions

I wouldn't do the vaseline thing cause then you'll have it in your tank and it'll be a real pain to skim out. Just secure the lid to the bottom tightly by any means you have. the ratchet strap is a good idea cause that should get it tight and also be easily removable, but anything along those lines should work. If all else fails Duct Tape!

Good call! Don't use vaseline I had trouble with a double tap connector and managed to get quite a bit in my system before I knew it and it was a pita. Had to do 3 every other day 50 percent WC's and let all my filters blast the surface to help keep the crap down in the water column to remove it.

Vaseline is fine and works good. I dont get how it would get into the water? put it around the o ring. then place the o ring on the canister. not while the o ring is in place. DO NOT over do it and glob it on. or you can buy the special "Fluval" silicone grease.

I overdid it and globbed it on several times... I was panicking about having to remove the filter... luckily it was one of four filters on the tank and completely unnecessary.
I recommend the silicone grease from Hagen now .
