Fluval substrate with Convicts?

I was wondering if I could use Fluval Stratum substrate in a tank with my Convict Cichlids?

I bought it, and then accidentally read the back where I found that it says you can't use it with African or Central American Cichlids.

I would like to use it to grow plants in their tank.

From my recollection with my experience with them, they are notorious for rearranging their tank. Even if you use it for plants, it's more likely that it won't stay planted for very long. Depending on how big the tank is and/or if you have a pair and/or if they pick the spot where you want to plant.

Most cichlids like to dig and your aquarium probably will stay cloudy because of that. Also a product that's fertilizer so may make your convict's sick.
