My FRT has trouble swallowing foods for the past weeks. It cannot swallow pellet foods, algae wafers, and even the occasional soft piece of fish meat any more.

The only foods it are able to eat are soft fruits, but it is only able to nibble them and not take regular bites like to use to.

It recently recovered from a pretty severe scud infection on its head and shell, and I am not sure if it is related. I cannot see much of the infection but I see a slight yellow coloring on the outside lining of its mouth. I have a feeling this is a sign of mouth crud

How do I treat this? I have had the turtle for the while and it is starting to lose weight.

could it have something t do with the high protein diet?

i thought they were supposed to have fruits and veggies as a main staple....

I started feeding the soft fish meat after it couldn't eat pellets anymore. Its main diet in the past was algae wafers and fruits.

Get the FRT into a brackish environment and place a turtle sulfa block in the tank or filter. The crud should clear up quickly. For the time being, offer the turtle skinless fish fillet meat, live anacharis plants, soft ripe kiwi wedges, blanched spinach leaves, banana chunks, chopped raw shrimp, chopped earthworms, and other similar soft (or softened foods). He should heal up fine.
If any open/infected sore/abcess is noted, get the FRT to a herp. certified vet for IM/IV antibiotic therapy.

Do Not use the sulfa block it will hurt them more than you know that stuff is for reg turtles like red ears etc fly rivers are very sensative just do water changes and add 3lbs of salt for every 100 gallons mine had a problem like this and I treated it just like this and in 3 weeks it was back to normal trust me

Would a dosage of 3 teaspoon/gallon be sufficient for "brackish" conditions?

Thats the dosage I used to treat ich.. etc.

I understand what you are saying about the sulfa block, but I know Oddball is very knowledgeable about these things as well. I wait wait to hear his reply. I have used sulfur dips in the past when it was much younger without any problems. Also, the turtle is quite large now at 6-7".

I'm telling from someone who helped me who owns 14 fly rivers and sulfa block is deadly to them and even can eat away at their shells

also I do know oddball is very intelligent when it comes to alot of fish knowledge just I have had your problem before and I was going to use the sulfa block I was yelled at and said not to and did the aquarium salt instead and it worked like a charm

I have used sulfa blocks with no problems. I have even crushed them and used them for a treatment dip once.
