Anybody on here keep flying squirrels? My grandpa keeps telling me about his squirrels he had and says flying squirrels are second only to golden mantels and uintah ground squirrels and so I've been looking around and found some flyers for sale pretty cheap and I've got a tank I could use for one. So has anybody ever kept them? What are their captive requirements and how are they as pets? Thnx

Back when I was around 12yrs I was riding my bike with a friend and saw a little ball on the road, smaller than a golf ball. It turned out to be a chipmunk. I'm guessing mom was moving him and a car came, so she dropped him. I scooped him up and set up a place for him, fed him with an eye dropper (like every two hours or something, little dude was constantly eating), he'd hold it like a little kid would.. aww.. anyways, I raised him up and he would ATTACK anything and everything except me. The most loyal pet I've ever had. I'd snag another one in a heart beat if I could.

I've had friends that had flying squirrels when I lived in TX, they're pretty cool. Check your local laws though, they're illegal where I'm at now. If they end up being illegal where you're at look into sugar gliders. - N

They are completely legal here, so long as they are captive breds. And I can't get a sugar glider because of size. A flyer would be fine in a 20 tall approximately and a sg needs at least a 4' tall enclosure. I had a golden mantel for about 2 weeks before I had to let him go, he was a "camp" pet, within a day of catching him he was tamer than my sisters hamster. It's amazing something so hyper can be such a good pet. Anybody else have any flyer experience?
