This is a stupid question, but I am hoping someone in this brain trust knows what I need.
I need a block of foam that fits a canister filter. The block is 3.5 x 3.5 x 9.5 inches. I use them in my sump and have replaced them in the past by just ordering the right foam block that fits some canister filer. I have been searching the internets for 2 hours. Which canister uses a foam block that size?

I might have it!!! Aquaclear 110? Maybe?

I just got an aqua clear. Haven't even plugged it in yet but I'm planning on shoving a whole "my pillow" in the media compartment it's that big.

How much does one of those pre-cut foam blocks cost? I'm wondering if you might not be able to get a larger sheet of some quality foam like Poret for the cost of a couple of those things. You can then cut a bunch of custom pieces for your needs, get a better quality longer-lasting foam and maybe save a few bucks all at once.

I don't use cannister filters but shouldn't the shape of the foam be circular shaped and not too thick to fit?

Whenever i'm in my LFS and I see the various sized sponges that are the "replacement spares" to go with this cannister or go with that filter, and then look at the prices, it always amuses me.

As jjohnwm jjohnwm said you can buy large sections of poret foam on line, quite cheaply, and just cut them down to size. Offcuts that don't fit anywhere just get chucked down in my sump, nothing's wasted.

if you wan to cut or shape sponge accurately, wet it and then place in plastic bag and into your deep freezer overnight.
You will be able to drill or shape quite well until it thaws out. Use a large blade with fine serrated edge like a bread knife.

Drilling is much harder than shaping but the freezing makes it easy. Use a wood spade bit.
