Foam Filter for Overflow?

I built the type II DIY overflow (the one that doesn't surface skim) a few months ago. I capped the end that goes in the tank and drilled a bunch of 1/4" holes in it. It works fine, but my mouthbrooder just spit a batch of babies in the tank early and I don't want them to be sucked down to the sump. So, I was wondering if anyone knows a website or link for a place that sells a coarse foam filter I could slide onto the pipe to keep the babies from getting sucked down? The pipe is 1.25" diameter. Just plain old panty hose? It doesn't have anything in it that will hurt the fish?
