Got a new hard drive today it had these 2 bits of foam in there I was wondering if they would safe to use in my filter .Don't know if there is a difference in the foam used in filters if they are ok will let soak for a while before I cut them to shape they are quite fine.

I probably would not do that. You don't know the materials used in making it for sure. If could release toxins into your tank.

A cheap replacement that is fish safe is that poly pillow filling you can get from arts and craft stores, dollar stores, Wal-Mart and the like. Can get massive bags of it for a few dollars.

I'm betting that the foam you have there is PU foam (polyurethane). Although polyurethane can be manufactured to be marine safe i'm also betting that the foam you have there is NOT marine safe. The chances are it's just a bog standard packaging grade PU and as a result may well contain flame retardants. I'd throw it in the bin if I were you.

As mentioned, you can get filter floss in bulk from a lot of places. Be sure to get 100% polyester. I just buy smart price pillows from the local supermarket. They are stuffed with this floss and it can't be beat for mechanical filtration.

On top of what's mentioned, I can't think that flow would be very good through that foam either!

It might be closed cell foam as well and not flow much of anything.
Hold it under the sink and see if water flows through it. You might find that it dosent flow through but rather around...

I bought a box of 6 large Fluval FX series foam sponges for less than ten bucks. They will last for years. Might go that route for peace of mind.
