Hi all,
I built a pond in the basement about a month ago. About 700 gallons. I added 27 koi and 50 goldfish. No cycled media was added. Filtration is a 55 gallon drum with an upward flow. The water first goes through a layer of black matala pad then a green matala pad. After that i have about a foot of space for media. I had the pond running with 40 goldfish and no media besides the matala for about 2 months. When i added the koi i went to home depot and got some sponges to put on top of the matala for more bio. The water in the pond became foamy within an hour. I figured that it was the sponges but instead of Taking the sponges out i decided to do a water change. I did 3 80% water changes that day and it cleared up. The next day i did another two and there was no more foam for another 3 weeks. All of the sudden its foamy again. Did another 80% water change. Cleared up. Next day foamy again. Is it the sponges at this point? Wouldnt it have left the system with the original water changes? Or is it the fact that it isnt fully cycled. Thanks in advance.
Few things:
The sponges did not come with any chemicals on them (as far as i can smell)
And when i soaked them in water prior to putting them in the tank no foam or suds came out of them.
Also, the fish dont seem affected at all. All eating even when the pond is covered in foam.

Either well oxygenated water or theres some type of soap in the water especially if the sponges were old the soap or chemical may have dried up and needed that flow of water through the sponges to come back but regardless if it happened after the sponges were added then the answer is pretty obvious whats causing it.

I had a similar issue with my 29 gallon where I used to live. It would get a kind of film/foam on the surface for no reason. It would go away for a day or two after a water change but always ended up coming back. Not sure why it happened but at my new house I don't have a problem anymore.

Foam is usually caused by (unless there is a foreign substance) proteins in the water.
I have found especially at certain times of year they seem to appear in out door ponds, and natural waters.
I use a DIY protein skimmer on my goldfish and koi ponds to remove proteins, free floating algae, and other metabolism waste products from the water column, by letting the foam fall on the ground, and even use them on indoor tanks that end up overcrowded, or have large protein loving fish.
Below is a video of the one on my 500 gallon koi pond. It contains only 2 medium koi, and 4x 6" goldfish.

the photo below is foam being removed from my 1500 gal cichlid pond

That seems like a lot of fish in your pond unless they're tiny.. I would say over stocking probably has something to do with it.

27 koi and 50 goldfish is fair amount of biomass to stock all at once....You probably are seeing protein collection
