Does anyone have any ideas of how to stop or seriously reduce the amount of food going down my overflow into my sump??

I am using a sinking type food (tetra bits) but some of it floats and heads straight for my overflow before my fish get to eat it all. I reduced the amount of food to try and stop this, but then I need to feed my fish more often (upto 6 times per day) which is not really practical.

Any ideas anyone??

Turn off your pump while feeding. It also is a call to all your fish to come on out for dinner.

that and/or put the food in a dish of tank water for a minute or two and then dump it into the tank so that it sinks faster

Good idea. It's those simple ideas that I always miss

I did try that and it worked quite good with about 95% of the food sinking right away, but I noticed that the water in the dish turned the color of the food and I thought/feared a lot of the goodness was coming out of the food pieces.

I just shut off my filtration for dinner time. Works like a charm.

I think this is what I'll do.

dont feed as much..

It's not that easy, the tank is right next to my sofa and when they get hungry, they all gather at the side window asking for food.....how can I resist :grinno:

Thanks for the great replies guys ;)

Use a feeding ring. They connect to the front/side of the tank and will hold food within the ring until it's either eaten or sinks from the ring.

This is something along the lines I was thinking about when I started this thread. I could make something like this quite easily.
Thanks Oddball :headbang2

I always just put the food in and then churn the water a bit with my finger. The ripples from the movement sink anything that hasn't already. Feeding rings are the best option though.
