I am currently keeping a 4” male kamfa (my first fh) and would like to give him the best to maximize his potential. I am currently feeding NLS Thera+A, freeze dried krill and small earthworms. He is showing decent growth and development. However, I have been browsing flowerhorn forums and have been seeing alot about flowerhorn specific diets, i.e. Chingmix, sumo, headbooster and the like. My question is is there any real benefit to these foods or just stick with the NLS?

Its to bad no one has responded yet cause I had basically the same question and just got my first fh as well. Feeding the same stuff as you except using frozen blood worms and meal worms instead of earthworms. Also trying to mix in some omega one super color pellets. Are you having good results so far? The aquarium store I go to has quite a few flowerhorns and two flowerhorn specific foods. One of which, they were out of (monster kok) the other was osi.. the owner told me of I was already using nls dont worry about buying the osi but come back and get monster kok when they restock .

I'm not familiar with this fish, but I've also liked to keep at least three different varieties of food on hand for all my fish. Such as my African cichlids, I keep pellet foods, frozen blood worms, and a few different fresh veggies pre blanched and frozen on hand. Feeding a variety can help ensure they are getting all the nutrition they need, hope this helps.

i just posted this under a different topic in this same forum topic of hybrids but heres what i wrote yea its worth the shot if not try something that has garlic added. my flowerhorn is not picky he eats anything and everything from flake to crisps to frozen to live. i even chop up clams and shrimp and every 5 days a small amount of beefheart. one of the pellets i feed is omega one sinking garlic marine pellets but its food and it has garlic in it which does wonders for fish. and i give him 1 day a week spirulina. just a little veggie matter. but try different stuff and it is normal for new fish not to eat right away sometime 5-7 days it last i know that one of my Geophagus didnt eat for about 10 then out of the blue he ate everything i put in the tank!!

Also i will toss in a massivore delight pellet. Such a little tid bit on earth worms when feeding them to you FH or any other fish, make sure that with the earthworms that you take them and put them in a different with lettuce or something so they and "release" all the waste in them just in case thy have something or took put fertilizer or some type of chemical.... you dont want to pass that on to your fish.

I dont believe all the stuff saying that certain foods can and will make the hump larger even tho i am pretty new to the whole Flowerhorn thing i am laid up until April (just had open heart surgery) so i read and read books and forums and other info off the net take some of it with just a grain of salt but other stuff seems to make a ton of sense. I believe and good food plan like switching each day to something different and making sure they get the proper nutrients when they are young will make you fish stand out years down the road. i hope this is some help to you. good luck and if you can post a pic of your FH!!!

I do not beieve in yhese specal fh foods.

I fed NLS, Spirulina Koi pellets and now and then a couple of massivore delight.

And tbat is it.

Flowerhorn forums are full of idiots, eager to part with their hard earned money while not understanding the majority of the science involving aquatic nutrition.

Any decent quality fish food will get the job done, there is no need to feed overpriced foods that are marketed as FH specialty foods.

The problem with the vast majority of Flowerhorn "specialty" foods, is that they are a gimmick - designed to create the illusion that if one feeds it to their flowerhorn, it too will grow a massive nuchal hump just like the fish that's illustrated on the package. When in reality, genetics will determine the potential of your fish, not some slick willy marketing propaganda.

I feed ALL of my fish NLS exclusively, and have been for the past decade. Do a search on "food" in this section & you'll find plenty of interesting reading on this subject.
