I was just about to go down to the LFS and get rid of all my convicts that have been breeding like rabbits when i saw this one. I wanted to know what would i need to do to bring out the intense color this one has into the offspring? Should i breed it with the father? The picture does this fish no justice its the only one i have that has color like this. I know its just a convict but if someone could just give me the basics of breeding for a certain trait i would be greatful.

It's all about selective breeding and culling. Select the one with the most color, and breed that one with the fish above. But sometimes fish colors dissapate as generations go.

Do the above, as well as out-crossing every 5-6 generations.. It'd be a good idea to browse some Guppy breeding forums, and read up about how they line breed for traits. It'll give you an idea about how to breed for a certain trait, and "lock in" that trait into your own line, and how to preserve that trait later on down the line.

You should always be selective breeding. I wouldnt be breeding back to the father unless he is particularly striking. Why dont you start looking at some shops or fish clubs for nice stock. Dont be afraid to pay top dollar for a nice specimen even though its a convict. If everyone who was breeding was discerning, a lot more of our captive bred fish would be stunning.

Breed her back to the father then go through the offspring for another male with good color. Most fish you can go a few generations.Be on the lookout for another good line to cross yours with

i know this is porbably a stupid post but i just want to make sure you know its a female in the picture and only the female get that color the males stay barred. But she is an awesome female.

There really is no benefit to breed her back to the father .... unless he is a particularly stunning fish too. By breeding her back to the father or any other average looking convict fish, you are simply setting yourself back a generation.... Go for some other nice looking fish cos someone has done a lot of the work for you already. I think people are getting confused with "fixing" a strain but these are all convicts remember!

whats the name of one of these forums?

Maybe try www.guppies.com/forums/index.php

There's pretty good breeding information there, and while some of it pertains strictly to Guppies, alot of it is overall general linebreeding and strain creating with most types of fish (Cons included).
