A couple curiosity questions. I currently have midas but i would think all species would exhibit similar behavior. What kind of surface/area do your fish prefer to spawn on? Do they usually spawn in a cave or a sheltered area or do they prefer to spawn in the open?
My pair seems super indecisive about where they want to actually lay eggs. Also do your pairs still eat as they would if they were not spawning? Females especially?

All of my Amphs, (hogaboomorum, red isletas, Xiloaensis) all spawn in a pot. My WC devils dont touch the pot and lay them on the side of a pvc pipe. So it all depends.

As for eating. Some of my females, stay near the eggs and rarely come out to eat. But most of my spawning pairs, share duties. Dad watches mom eats, then mom watches and dad eats.

I've had the same pair of fish spawn in a pot and then spawn on a flat rock a few weeks later so I don't think they really mind it... they will look for a suitable place and use it. Females did seem considerably more stressed when spawning out in the open though, or so it looked like.

Thanks guys, so it sounds like they don't really care but the female probably prefers the cover. I have noticed my pair did seem to switch duties when food entered the water. At least for a few days anyway.

I've got a pair of Amphilophus Lyonsi and they refuse to spawn unless they're supplied with a pot. They'll go thru the motions and even clean a spawning site, but never follow thru with out a pot. Though I've got some serious pred's in the tank so they probably feel they need cover. Their sharing a tank with an Armatus, Curupira and a Gar so I think they are on edge about spawning in the open.

Yea I would be afraid to have kids with an armatus in the tank too. I ask because they go all around the tank digging pits and what not but they constantly switch up where they want to stay. They have only spawned once in a cave. It looks like they want to spawn in the open now because they are defending a spot quite vigorously and mom looks like she is cleaning a rock.

Good job spawning lyonsi by the way.

All my amps spawn in pots. They eat too.
