Which gender of this breed is the meaner or more dangerous to weaker tank mates?

I've heard females were meaner but in my experiene the some males are rough. So what's the research?

Its just the personality of the fish. There are plenty of mean females, but males in general must be territorial, and combative, since that is how they gain the right to breed.
Not to mention a male will have more weapons to do damage.

If you really want to hear some horror story females, look into Haitian Cichlids (black nasty's) they literally call them BLACK nasty because of the Female not the male. Since the female is the one who turns completely black.

Troy I don't have a lot of experience with them but the one male that I've had for a year and a half now is a big pansy. I got him around 3", now he's 11" and is pretty much as docile as a low key Jack Dempsey. He's bigger than every fish in his tank and gets pushed around by a 7" black belt, and an Oscar and a jag that's almost his size.

I've had success with female festae's in a community setting with other cichlids. Males tend to be more relentless bullies. Just sharing my personal experience.

Males are generally nastier than females... In breeding mode though, females are very aggressive when defending young.

Males are normally more aggressive but the females are pretty close; there's few other species where I've heard of females killing males. In the end though it comes down to the individual I've seen extremely nasty females yet mine gets bullied by a convict half its size

Always funny to hear convicts being used as dithes, I always hear the same thing. The convicts end up bullying the fish they were suppose to be dithers for. They are tough little suckers, my istlanum I have now, used to get in some serious battles with my convict pair, until he finally killed the female, then got the male later. But the convicts gave him all he could handle many times, as well as initiating a lot of the conflicts.
