Saw some at lfs today and was very tempted to get a few but no tank space. A quick question, can they be sexed at 2-3" and what are some of the things to look for?

Thanks in advance

males are more colorful but there nasty. i had a 5 inch grammy that wouldnt back down to any of my fish even fish twice his size. mean little bastards

Yes, very easy to sex.

Males will have a lot of red spangles all over the body.

Yep. Females may have red spangles above the lateral line but none below. Get some.

Here's an old crappy pic of a male and female. I didn't have enough lighting back then to not use the flash. But you can see that below the lateral line, the male has spots and the female has white circles. I've since separted these two into different tanks because I want them to grow as quickly as possible. Lately the overly confident 7" male Grammodes has been trying to face off with my 12" Dovii. He recently had his arse handed to him and is recovering a wound on his upper back and torn up fins. He's going to be fine though as long as he's learned to not challenge the Dovii. When I first got the Grammy, I expected a shy fish that hides most of the time because I heard that about them. This one is not shy at all. He's always out in the open strutting his stuff.

I think grammodes are one of the most unique cichlids I've owned. I think they really look cool.

I saw one today at a LFS, I think it might have been a male too. I might get it once I set up my tank.
