the air tube to create airation? Or do you just use a seperate air pump?

Do you know if power filters are more efficient with or without the air tube?

Cheers,
JR :)

I've never seen one with an air tube.... what brand are you using?

Canister filters don't oxygenate the water so I would recomend using an over the back filter or a large air stone. You will need to watch the fish to be shure they don't start gasping for air.

Well in one tank I have a powerful powerhead that just fills the water with oxygen and creates a good current on the surface, and on the second tank I have the internal power filter with an airpump with 2 stones. But I also have the airtube on the filter, I'm just wondering if that's necessary or if it will perform better without the airtube :)

The bubbles in the water do little or nothing to help oxygenation of the water.... the bubblers do it by moving the water to the surface where it can touch the air.

Over the backs do this best because of the volume of water they move.

If your tank is lightly stocked you won't notice it like you will if the tank is crouded

BTW what size are your tanks and what size and type of fish do you keep?

The powerhead does seem to do that too :) It creates a big surface current, and a kind of whirlwind of bubbles in the corner of the tank, so it must be mixing the water with the air :)

I've just back into fish, I currently have 2 4 foot tanks with a wolf fish around 7 inches, 5 inch oscar, 8 inch bichir, 6.5 inch hujeta, and a 4 inch piranha.

its the same power but when you have the air tube on it just creates oxygen into your tank thats a good thing but if you have piranhas i suggest you dont use it
