Just thought I'd share how much sand gets kicked up by my rays. My tank is 36" high and filter intake is at 33". This filter sock is 7" x 30" and looks like this in 3 days. My substrate depth is about 1 1/2".

wow, im not having a problem with pool filter sand, it seems to drop right away. but then again, i dont have rays.
The sand was washed first and has been in the tank for over a year now.Kinda nuts how much is kicked up. Maybe the sand up in Alberta is lighter? Who knows. Used to be a real pain in the .... before I put in the filter socks. To lazy to suck up 250 pounds worth or a lot less by now lol. The pro is the rays love it.

Definitely would make life easier. I still like the look of some sort of substrate but after this the barebottom is worth considering.
