Hello; Just this spring a pit bull mauled the grandmother of a local household. Don't know the particulars, but the elderly lady was put in the hospital. The dog was reported to be the family pet.
A friend that lives a few miles from me has taken over the care of his sons pit bull. The dog is fine with him, but aggressive with other people. He keeps all of house doors locked to keep someone from walking in on the dog even when he is home. He puts the dog in a locked room when people visit and had a privacy fence installed so the dog can be left out side.
I lived at one time next to folks with a pit bull. The dog was not approachable by me or anyone but the people who owned it. I did my yard work with a pistol on my belt.
I am sure that many of you will dismiss my stories and the reports of all the other attacks done by pit bulls. Keep this in mind. I do believe they are dangerous and often go armed. I will not hesitate to shoot one given any sign of an attack on myself or someone else. There are a lot of people like me around. you may love your dogs and feel safe around them, but many of us do not. Keep your dogs under control at all times.
That said, it is not just pit bulls that can be dangerous. Last week, a great dane sent a child to the hospital with severe lacerations to his head. I have been attacked by a german shepard while ridding my bicycle and avoided being bitten by keeping the bike between myself and the dog. I now go armed when riding.
The states around here have lead laws. This means that your dog cannot run loose and when off your property must be on a lead and under control. Do this and it will only be your family members in danger.

Its all about the owners......

this is exactly my mindset about pits and pretty much all dogs that are big enough to do some damage

one of my neighbors dog scared the crap outta me once at night. not that i was afraid of it, but i was afraid for my kids. i come home, unloading my kids from their car seat and i hear claws scraching pavement nearby

i look and it's the neighbors mutt, so i put the baby back in the car and grab a metal rod. it barks at me, charges and stops like 30 ft away and turns and runs into the neighbor's backyard

pissed me off really, i'd have no problem telling a neighbor i beat their dog to death because it bit one of my kids or myself. sorry dog owners, that's just me being real

They are beautiful animals but can become vicious is a second for no reason. I always wanted one but my parents always said no. Don't think they are all bad though

I've had 4 Pitbulls in my life. 3 of which were complete babies that never hurt a fly. The fourth on the other hand ripped the leg off of a Maltise / Poodle mix.

The first 3 were raised up by me from 6-8 wks old. until they passed. They also excercised with me and were trained by me. These dogs were social, happy, high energy animals that were only interested in chasing balls and frisbees. Excepting "King" all he wanted to do was run or swim. But that was my fault because during that time that's all I did. And he was ALWAYS with me.

The fourth was a rescue that my uncle got at about 8 months old. He had severe scarring around his ears that indicated fighting but my uncle insisted it wasn't because his quack vet said so. This dog was never trained or corrected properly and eventually things went to hell for my uncle and he asked me to come get him. This dog had a known small dog / animal aggression issue said my uncle, but had never shown any type of people aggression. My current dog (Dusty) Cocker Spaniel and this particular pit were introduced with the pit wearing a muzzle. The pit growled I corrected, and the pit stopped. This happened 2x and then the pit was fine with my Cocker. They were inseperable, The Pit showed good manners, the Cocker let the Pit lay his head on his bed when I shut the house down. The Pit was actively living with a Smaller dog and no problems.

HOWEVER, my in law lives with me and she has this Maltise / Poodle. This dog is out of control. Growls at everything, Attacks people coming in and out the front door, and spend smost of the time living in a bedroom except for when it is let outside. The Pit in question and my Cocker were laying in the kitchen when someone knocked at the front door. The room the Maltise / Poodle stays in opened up and the dog ran into the living room as the Pit walked into the room. The Maltese Attacked the Pit and the Maltese lost his front right leg before I could intervene. Would the pit have jumped on the Maltese Poodle if it hadn't attacked. I don't know because I had made certain that they were never around each other.

Who's at fault? The Maltese? The Pit? Or me the owner? I take responsibility because I should have trained the damn Maltese instead of throwing my hands up and walking away as the mother in law ruined that dog. But instead it cost me about $4,000.00 in vet bills to save the Maltese and I found a new home for the Pit.

The one thing in all this that stood out the most for me was the way the staff at the Vet Hospital kept throwing around the saying "Another Pit Attack" as they worked on the Maltese. What really irked me was the Maltese attacked the Pit.

Not all kids are good kids, Not all Parent are Good Parents.

OH WAIT. We were talking about Pitbulls.

Not all Pitbulls are good dogs. Not all dog owners are good dog owners.

Just my 2cents.

I've had an AKC Register Labrador Retriever, Never had a Golden. But I'd rather have a Pitbull or a Rotweiller. Or (Dusty), Doubt I'll ever find another Cocker like this dog. He's my all time Best dog.

the only reason any pet breed is usually considered dangerous is because of the bad press it really is no matter how u look at it cause if all of a sudden say german shepherd attacks where the only dog attacks we would see on tv or hear on the radio or became the common fighting dog most people that already look at pits in fear would start to look at germans in fear it really is that simple i've know 5 pit bulls none have ever attacked any or even snapped at anyone my friend had a rottweiler when i was a kid that sort of attacked me once don't remember what happened but what ever i still really like that breed and the biggest rottweilers that i have ever met where the nicest dogs i ever met (unless u were trying to rob the house).
