This^^^^^ and, sometimes you find something say like a tooth, that the root is most likely to crumble up on you, but you can keep it in tact better by leaving it in place in the matrix, which is the chunk of formation its found in. You usually try to clean as much away from the focal point as you can with out loosening it from the matrix. If I already have some of the tooth loose, and if its a good one and in a good looking position I will leave it as well. When I look or shop for other fossil teeth or certain fossils, I like to see them in a bit of matrix so you can get a little part of the land they inhabited as well.
