I have a fossochromis who doesn't seem to color up, How can I tell if it is a male, or just being subdominant?

i'd say if its a male it wont start to show color till its about 4-4.5 inches...they get prety big as adults so i think it takes onger to mature
You have a long way to go, I bought mine at about 5", 5.5" and he was silver for a 5 months afterwards. He has since become one of the best looking fish in my tank. He has become aggressive towards a Tramitichromis intermedius that is his size back from a breeding trip. I will post a picture of him when i get my new camera.
Here is two shots of my fossochromis.... He is hard to take a picture of. He really likes to get colored up at night. He gets way better than this. But this is what you get to look forward too!
yeah,and the fins develop real slow also,but get nice points.I got 6 and couldn't tell which ones were male,until the anal fin developed a small point.nice fish Robulus153.
