i found a 55 gal tank, with a filter for 50$. was wondering what my options are for making the tank bigger. like building a plywood tank, how big can i go using the glass from the 55. its a 55long not tall

you could make it 4 inches wider and taller than the glass on each side like i did with my build... but i dont know how much deeper (front to back) i would dare go because its only 1/4th inch glass right?? not sure about this maybe some one more knowlegable could verify but what if you doubled up the front and back pieces and siliconed the edges making it 1/2 inch if you could make the tank like 30+ inches front to back???... for sure it wouldnt be as strong or clear as a solid half inch but would definatley be stronger right? if you could you would have a tank roughly 52x18x30+ with would be atleast 120gallon

from my understanding you can go as deep as you want. the water pressure is more from the height of the tank. the taller the tank the thicker the glass. So depending on if you want to be able to see the tank from the sides and back how big of a tank you can go. You can take the back and front pane and us them to make the front of the tank.

waiting to get a pay check lol. got laid off again and just started a new job last thursday

but on another note i did find this stuff @ work i think may be suitable for waterproofing a tank. its some sort of fiberglass board, its thin, like 1/16 of an inch or so, its got some sort of stick backing to it to stick it to whatever, would just have to cut to size, stick it in place, and put a thick bead of silicone around all corners, and around the top. its used inside of industial coolers, so its FDA approved safe for the food industry. should be good for a tank also, just got to make sure to seal it super good. only thing is, the stuff is white, and i dunno if it comes in other colors. not a big fan of having a white tank inside. im going to call or go by lowes next day off and see if they carry the stuff and what colors it comes in. might try to get a sample from work to experiment with but there kinda strict about that stuff there.

check out nolapetes 55gal expantion thread, you will be suprized at how big you could make a 55gal.
No findums?

Oh, oh. That thread...

i wonder if you could paint the fiberglass board then put one more layer of fiberglass resin over top of it.. then it would be the color you want and i would use that instead of silicone to seal the joints together? you wouldnt need much just 1 or 2 coats its cheap i got the stuff at lowes for like 18 bucks and have some left over

that fiberglass board is slick, would have to be scratched up. krylon fusion might stick to it. but yeah a small thing of resin would be fine.
