I heard my rockwork shift the other night in my tank. I was in bed and heard it happen down the hall. When I turned on the lights, I could see 3 -4 pretty large rocks had fallen. Luckily none of them hit the glass. Once one smaller rock on the top fell, it just seemed to cause some larger rocks to slide as well. When I set up my bigger tank, I think I will putty together the larger pieces and make sure all smaller rocks are either puttied together or placed in a way they won't shift. That could have been a reason for your loss. Double check your rocks to make sure they are secure before adding new fish to prevent this in the future.
