Looks like a Tasmanian Killer Zombie Snail...you'll probably need to sell your house and undergo quarantine and de-contamination procedures, along with the rest of your family and any dogs or cats you might own. You didn't actually put your hands into the water, did you? Good thing you caught this early, otherwise....:nilly:

Sorry, couldn't resist. It's just a snail (hard to tell from the pic, Ramshorn, I think?), not the AntiChrist. There will almost certainly be more, but they are generally harmless and may be beneficial. They eat leftover food, and depending upon your fish the snails may be food, especially if you help the process by squishing them against the glass. They tend not to bother healthy plants. They are a normal part of a normal healthy ecosystem.

Please don't fall for the end-of-times panic that many aquarists seem to experience when they see a snail. If they start to overpopulate, that's a good indicator that you are overfeeding the tank. If it gets out of hand and you think you have too many, you can get one or two Assassin Snails (for real, I didn 't make this one up!). The Assassins are very attractive striped snails and in many tanks they do a great job of controlling the population of other snails...emphasis on controlling, not eliminating.

Relax, and enjoy the new addition. Personally, I wouldn't have a tank without them. :)

The name got me i was like oh no i never heard of a tazmanian snail before???. I panicked and threw it out but if i see more i wont mind them if theres a handful. Im assuming in a 60 gal, maybe like 10-30? Would be an ok amount before i consider it a problem? Hahahaha thanks for easing my mind, its just creepy when you see a creature in your tank you didnt put there.

Most snails are transported to your on live plants at LFS.

I wouldn’t worry in a 55 gallon about 100 rams horn snails so a 60 gallon wouldn’t be much different.

I agree with jjohnwm jjohnwm they aren’t something to hit a panic button, drop nukes on your tank and then go around in an armored car fighting hordes of zombies like it’s the end of the world. If you don’t like them and don’t want to squish them then get a lettuce leaf, stab it with a fork, toss it in the tank at night, then in the morning the snails will be on it and you can toss it out.

Tasmanian killer zombie snails!
They crawl outta the tank at night and lay eggs in your ears while you sleep.
Then the little ones hatch and eat your brains. Crawl back out to look for water to start the life cycle over again.

looks like rams horns to me. BTW.

I haven’t personally fed any snails to my fish on purpose, they may have eaten one I squished here and there, so I don’t know just how healthy they are. I would imagine they aren’t bad for your fish but I would wait for someone more qualified to answer. Maybe make a thread asking that question if you want to know.
