Ive been aware that alligator gars are illegal in california for some time. A friend of mine and i went to the lfs the other day and noticed a juvenile 6 inch Gar of some sort in their large 500gal tank. We werent sure what type of gar it was and thinking it may be a gator we asked the owner if it was. He proceded to say " no. alligator gars are illegall, It's a spotted gar", Which i believe it was. it was priced at 90$. I didn't think much of it but just today read that gars of all types are illegal in california.
Whats going on? Oh and the shop is very good about legality and proper names for the fish they sell.
