Nice info.... Now we might be able to tell the diff between florida and spotted (atleast for me :))

good info. however note this info is regarding wild specimens, and those differ quite a bit from captive gars. for example, while wild spotted gars get up to 4 feet, it is pretty uncommon to see spotted gars above 20" in home aquariums.

further more, the ID method for telling between spotted and florida gars has been dispelled, and it has little to no use in the ID of captive fish. The only sure way to ID these fish is to know the location where they or the breeding stock they came from originated. even when examining known fish with known locality data attached the whole 2/3rd thing was useless for ID purposes..The bony plates can only be observed when you cut out the opercular cover so obviously this is not such a good way to ID you fish if you want it alive.
