Hello all, I joined originally looking to build a plywood tank. Well things haven't worked out so I ended up with a 10G cherry shrimp tank. Luckily MFK has forums for everything! So onto the problem, I have been pulling something fly larvae out for the last month or so, probably about 15 in all. I dont know what they are but the heads look like dragonflies. Then the other day I saw a wierd thing "scooting" around the tank. Looks like a half adult size cherry shrimp with a clear body and black stripes. It has a short tail that is usually underneath its body, and its rear 4 legs seem to just drag as it moves. Has not shown any aggression towards the other shrimp but I took it out just in case. I posted a little video on youtube for help ID'ing hopefully. Its a bad quality video, but the best I can do.

Please take a look and see if any of you can help. Thanks!

 It's a scud. You have hundreds by now. Harmless and a great snack for most everything else. The larval stage looks like cyclops and you can see females carrying egg masses. I have thousands. Love the buggers. Google "gammarus" and you'll be hot on the trail.

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. So these are safe with my shrimp? I have seen the term "scud" before and could never find what it was. It is so interesting how all this just shows up in the tank. I cycled and had the Cherry's in there for almost a month and then one day I had tiny little bugs swimming everywhere. Then a week later I had limpets on the glass. Then when the mosquito larvae showed up and I took out all the cholla wood I found I had Tubifex too. Im still waiting for the Bryozoa to show up cause I think they actually look neat!

i keep finding damsel fly larave in my cherry tank but due to the condensation tray on the top when they are ready to fly away they cant and i find them dead floating on the top of the water.

shame as they look cool

Awesome.....if you have a Cichlid/Sunfish/Gourami tank feed those to them and they will love you for it.
