I have been interested in getting a four eye butterfly fish (Chaetodon capistratus) but I can find very little information on them. I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with them or know much about there care. Are they one of the easier butterflys to get onto a prepared diet or are they typically a finicky eater? I have tried doing some research of my own with little success so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lot of the butterflies can be harder to care for/get to eat prepared foods.

Have you heard of wetwebmedia? They have great troubleshooting and FAQ on most available fish in the trade.

Thanks for the help! I checked wetwebmedia and it said they don't typically adjust to aquarium life. Guess I will be going back to searching for a butterfly I like.

WWM is a great site.

That being said, gain up some experience...and when you feel ready maybe give one a try. I always feel bad killing fish that are wild caught though.

(Not to say I dont feel bad killing any fish, but its somehow worse when you think about the reefs being plundered. :()

I feel comfortable with more difficult fish it is just that it seems like these guys just up and die with out a know cause because it says they adapt to captive food. I may have to find some room for a species tank and try one once I get my food cultures going strong again. And I agree I really hate killing wild caught fish.

Haven't kept a foureye butterfly but have heard they are finicky. I did have a spotfin butterfly (also from the Caribbean) for 11 years; it was fairly "easy" as butterflies go.

Thanks for the input! I think I am going to hold off on trying a foureye butterfly for now. And one of the reasons I was really attracted to the foureyes over other species was their smaller size.

What sort of live food cultures do you have?

Any marine tanks running right now?

What sort of food cultures would you have to run to keep this 4-eye?
