Retroculus archerontos, formally known as Retroculus sp. Alto Tocantins, was photographed by Oliver Lucanus and featured in a 2011 issue of Cichlid News magazine. There is a picture on Cichlid Room Companion, and also on Oliver Lucanus's Below Water Facebook page:

The yellowish-red coloration, black blotches, and fact that the fish do display nuchal humps immediately made me think of Geophagus pellegrini.
 
I seen Oliver just posted an old video. Oliver always has posted some unique earth eaters.
 
Very interesting. Agree with you, my first impression of the photo is something related to the steiny group. Support for Kullander's suggestion that retroculus is a basal fish?
 
I bet these are going to be just like Retroculus Septentrionalis. Never ever imported into the hobby. Shame.
