frashwater clams

i have freshwater clams 3 of them . had them for a year. i got them from a lake one died or got eaten. i have never fed or moved them. i can see them open and close. sometimes the cichlids burry them with rocks. i dont know anything about them. actualy i pretty much forgot about them until now. Does any one know stuff about clams.

The only thing I know about them is that when I go fishing sometimes the fish will have black spots all over them and thats the pupa (sp) stage of a clams life.

Oh and my grandpa likes to fry them............ew.

Many fresh water clams and mussels have a parasitic larval stage, unless you know that the species you have does not do this it is better not to keep them.

yes they are, and they eat left overs..but watch out for any parasitic i«stage of them that could infect the fish...

they thrive in planted tanks with a sandy bottom and for the best growth rate use a dropper and inject frozen brine when they are open. they def are awsome if you have a nitrate problem though. they are tough little guys and for the record, introducing any wild caught invert is a terrible idea its not like you can treat them to get rid of anything. theyre sensitive to everything.

Not to keep a 7 month old post up but.... I've never heard anything about an animal obsorbing nitrates. Also when many shells reproduce they release parasitic cultures that can live on fish. NOT GOOD. there are a few that will filter sand and don't do anything to fish.
