how come my two 12in silver aros are so scared of me. whenever i approach the tank, they scurry into the corner in a "crouching" position?

some aro's are just really scared... best to do is hope is gets used to his enviroment;)

They're just that way sometimes, they'll get better over time. Try to approach the tank slowly and with no sudden movements. But don't approach so slow that they will feel if you are stocking them. Also make sure the room is well lit so they do see you coming, don't want to surprise them. Also keep from wearing the colors of red, orange, and pink these colors do affect some aros. Spend time with them, eventually they will realize that you are not a threat.

sorry, i have no pics, but i have had them for about 6 months and i am tired of them darting away and crashing into the walls. even the slow walking does not work. they know i am the food source when i have my face at the feeding hole, but just getting in my room makes them scared.

do you think it depends on the individual whether they are scared or not?

With two of them they may panic and scare each other. Other contributers could be tank size and water parameters. What size tank are they in? How are your water parameters, mainly ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH? Also do they have any tank mates?

all water conditions are fine. the tank is 125g and there is only a pleco in with them. there is a blue background and gravel. lighting is fair also.

well tank size is okay if it is the 6 foot version. You may want to try some floating plants(I just use regular plastic plant but don't anchor into the gravel)
Also add some dither fish, for whatever reason large schools of smaller fish seem to have a calming effect on many fish. Ofcourse if the fish are to small they may be eaten, if you don't feed live feeders you may be alright. Good dithers would be giant danios or silver dollars. tinfoil barbs would work to but they get rather large.
