Bought a used 180 sw setup with a very large skimmer plumbed into the sump system. Skimmer is 6 feet tall. I am going to set up fw but thinking of plumbing the skimmer in because all the pipe work is there and then if i ever decide to go sw i would be already plumbed for it. Would using it give me any benefits other than water volume? Maybe oxgenate the water? Not to sure how a skimmer works.

Only real benefit would be increased aeration for the tank. Protein skimmers don't really work to well in FW tanks especially ones designed for a SW system. I would just run it, no harm in it at all.
