Grabbed a 55 off the curb today needs cleaned up and resealed. Never resealed a tank before. Is it worth the effort? The tank was completely free. Thinking of selling it as a reptile tank. Don't really need it now.
It's actually very easy to do a tank reseal. I have recently finished resealing & leak testing seven 30G, two 33L, one 125G tanks. I still have one 75G & one 30G to go. The time consuming part, for me, was removing the old silicone interior seal. It took me about one hour for each of the smaller tanks. Washed the tanks out, let dry thoroughly, then cleaned the glass area to be caulked with denatured alcohol. Applied silicone with caulk gun, tooled the bead with my gloved finger & let cure for recommended bead size.
I still need to 'trim' some of the excess from the sides where my finger slipped during the bead tooling. I am very pleased with my results so far. Maybe I'll finally be getting these tanks setup soon.
here is a tip after you get tank all cleaned up put some tape down at all the seals. Put the tape about a 1/4 inch away from each side leaving the area to be siliconed exposed. Lay down a bead of silicon and then use the back side of a spoon to keep a nice clean edge. You want to spread the silicon onto the tape a little. As soon as you finish sealing the tank quickly remove the tape for a nice clean silicon edge. If you let the silicon dry on the tape it is gonna be a pain to remove the tape.
Thanks everyone for the advice. I went over to a guy from another forums place with the intent of resealing this tank along with 3 others he had laying around. After several hours we got the old silicone stripped off and the tanks cleaned up. and we started running out of daylight so we called it quites. I ended up donating the tank to the local aquarium club that he belongs to.
