Yesterday a classmate offers me a pair of blind cave tetras. I accept, then begin to advise her on how to pack them up. She shuts me down with "I've been keeping fish for thirty years", and I believe her since there's no reason to doubt her abilities yet. This morning, I get to class and see a cup of pink, cloudy water on my desk. It's a tupperware container, which is fine, but the bottom of it is carpeted with food! WTF? I think she meant she's been killing fish for thirty years.
So I've got them in quarantine now and they've got pretty bad septicemia from the looks of it. Both have some blood in the fins and one fish has neon-red gills that elicit a pain reaction from looking at them. They are acting like normal blind cave tetras so far. The quarantine tank is a well-established 10g with an Aquaclear 30, and the two tetras are the only inhabitants now that I've moved the catfish to my 55 to make space for them. I added three spoonfulls of kosher salt in case of ich, etc. Is there anything else I can do for them?

Okay, I found a source saying that the symptoms are the same for ammonia toxicity. I know they were in narsty water, so I'll hold off on treatment until something clicks.

Water quality issue would be my guess rather than septicemia itself. Clean water is your best defense here. If the issue is related to water quality, no meds are needed. Only water changes can fix that issue.

Then they're already on their way. Thanks!

So should I do more water changes, or is the usual 50% per week going to pull them through?

The poor little things. Yea, the more water the merrier for the nxt week or 2. I bet they'll be well on their way to healed after you've had them a week.
